 Laptop Computer Initiative
A Roncalli Foundation Project
The Aberdeen Catholic School System intends to take a great leap forward in improving the educational experience of our students: we hope to provide laptop computers for all students at Roncalli High School in grades 9-12.
How will laptops improve our students' experience?
- College Preparation - Technology use will more fully prepare students for their future: for college where, laptops are required increasingly by all students; for the workplace, where computers are part of virtually every job; and for everyday life where computer technology is becoming an integral part of leisure, recreation, entertainment, travel, and just about everything we do.
- Enhanced Educational Experience - Research on similar programs at other schools has shown improvements in students' basic math and writing skills, digital literacy skills, thinking skills, communication and interpersonal skills, and productivity skills. In addition, such schools have found students to be more engaged in their work, resulting in better attendance and fewer disciplinary problems.
- Digital Delivery - Curriculum content is increasingly delivered digitally--via the Internet, DVD, CD, & other electronic formats. This includes textbooks, study guides, tests, and other materials. Laptops will make this delivery more efficient. Laptops will also allow students to access classes offered online.
- Communications- Technology will enhance the already high quality interaction between Roncalli students and teachers. Students will be able to email questions and assignments directly to teachers, whether in class, in school, or at home.
- Instructional Innovation - Constant, at-the-students'-fingertips availability of mobile computer technology will expand teachers' options in delivering lessons. In addition, mobile computing permit both teachers and students to utilize and to adapt to different learning styles.
The Roncalli Foundation is raising funds to support this project, which has an initial investment cost of approximately $400,000. Our goal is to raise money beyond that amount and create an endowment within the Roncalli Foundation for the purpose of funding the project on an annual basis.
