What is Destination ImaginNation?

Destination Imagination is a creative problem-solving program for students in grades 3rd-12th.  The program dedicates itself to enriching the lives of students by providing opportunities to explore and discover unlimited creative potential through teamwork, cooperation, and mutual respect.  Teams choose from structural, technical, artistic, improvisational and performance challenges.  Teams consist of five to seven team members.

Like in any sport of after school organization there is a commitment of time.  From the time teams are formed until tournament time it will be up to the Team Manager to determine how often the team will practice.  In most instances teams will need to meet once a week or once every other week and as the tournament approaches many teams meet more often.  Team members need to be at all practices since this is a cooperative teamwork effort to come up with a solution to the problem.  It is also very important that if your child joins a team that they are committed to participate until tournaments have ended.  If a team looses a member in most instances they will not have the opportunity to replace that member.  The regional tourney in Aberdeen which the students would participate is normally in March.  If they qualify at this tournament they go on to the state tournament held in Pierre which is normally in April.

The formation of teams will depend on parent volunteers to be Team Managers.  Parents can also volunteer to be Assistant Team Managers.  The managers never coach or get involved in the solution to the challenge but rather concentrate on facilitating the process of exploration, discovery and creative problem solving for the team.  Team Managers receive a guide that explains the process of Destination ImagiNation.
