Unit 2 Lesson #4 (pp. 82-87)
Focus: Rhythm
1) Get Set: Follow Lesson
- Review “Mango Walk” (CD2:19)
~ students will listen to “Mango Walk” and
determine how many times they hear the syncopated rhythm by showing the count
with their fingers
~ students will sing “Mango Walk” (p 70) and
clap the syncopated rhythm each time it occurs
2) Develop: Follow Lesson
- Learn the movements to “Mango Walk”
~ students will read about movement on p 82
~ students will learn and perform the movements to
“Mango Walk” on p 83
- Echo syncopated and non-syncopated rhythm patterns
~ students will listen to Recorded Lesson, “Echoing
Syncopated and Non-Syncopated Rhythm Patterns” (CD2:27)
~ students will read about ties (pp 84-85)
- Introduce “Sweet Potatoes” (CD2:28) and dotted
quarter note rhythms
~ students will listen to “Sweet Potatoes”
~ students will read and follow instructions on pp
86-87
- Sing partner song “Two for the Table” [“Sweet
Potatoes”/”Mango Walk”] (CD2:29)
~ students will listen to “Two for the Table”
~ students will be split into 2 groups to sing “Two
for the Table”
3) Apply: Follow Lesson
- Read and play percussion parts to accompany “Mango Walk”
~ students will read about percussion instruments
on p 87
~ students will speak the rhythm patterns on p 87
~ students will play the rhythm patterns on
percussion instruments
~ students will accompany “Mango Walk” with the
percussion rhythms
4) Close: Follow Lesson
- Sing “Two for the Table”
