MIDDLE SCHOOL ALL-STATE BAND
An opportunity for students in grades 6-8, Middle School All-State Band is an audition selected ensemble which performs in Pierre in early March. Two bands, the Honor Band and the Festival Band are formed from taped auditions throughout the state.
Preparation must begin in the early fall. Audition materials include a chromatic scale, two major scales and two etudes. All of that literature is recorded as it is learned, with the deadline for completion being Thanksgiving. The tapes are sent in and judged by selected music teachers in the state. Notification of the selected musicians comes in early to mid-January, and the music to be learned is sent to each student prior to the festival.
